Hi Everyone:
Well, it's great to have met you and I'm looking forward to a fun and productive semester here at AEC. This first post is to show you that I'm not the only person who is able to teach you your math. There are plenty of others - 'youtubers', with fabulous skills. Tonight, I want to introduce you to my personal favourite - PROFROBBOB. The lesson we did in class is a direct take-off from his lesson that can be found at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eFZOnAcuVLM.
So, now that you've taken the notes on parabolas and things about them, sit back and enjoy.
Stay in touch with me via email, phone, or this blog. Ask lots of questions. Attend as regularly as possible. In the meantime take care. Talk to you soon.

Basic and Continuing Math
Well Hi There. It's December 7, 2017:
I have a link for a little interactive practice session on simple percent problems.https://www.ixl.com/math/algebra-1/percent-word-problems
You will still need pencil and paper but it's a nice change from doing a worksheet. Have a great day.

Hi All:)
November 23, 2017: Ok, tonight is the night we meet at another location, and I hope everyone remembers that it's just a one-time thing. Our topic tonight is Elevator Physics. It's the explanation of why we feel a bit funny in an elevator when it speeds up or slows down. Really, it is a very cool topic. The videos are to augment what we did in class, but if you weren't in class, they'll at least give you some idea of what it is we studied. See you soon:)

Hi Everyone: Well, golf season is officially over for us hardy Winnipegers, but the Jets are winning, so all is well:). Times are busy at our little adult school in the North End so the post today is just a quick list of links to some videos about Free Body Diagrams. They are simple diagrams which show the forces acting on a given object. As usual, the videos won't match up perfectly with my lessons, but they are great resources. So have a watch and listen and enjoy:)

Physics 30S
Vectors
Hi Everyone: It’s Wednesday, October 18, 2017. Well, we had
a grand time last night doing vector drawings, and you learned and picked up on
it very well. Here are a few videos that review what we’ve done and preview
what is to come. The lesson at the end of the day was, YOU CAN ADD VECTORS
IN ANY ORDER AND STILL GET THE SAME RESULTANT.A reminder that there is no class on Thursday, Oct 19.

Physics 30S. So today is Monday, October 2, and I
just wanted to give you a quick update about what we did and what is to come in
the next few class or so. We are studying Uniform Motion and Kinematics graphs.
We studied P/T and V/T graphs and the meanings of their slopes and area between
the line and the x-axis for V/T graphs.
On Tuesday
we will continue this discussion to include curved P/T graphs and introduce the
concept of acceleration and its associated graph. That will be followed by an
in-class assignment based on those items.
In relation
to the kinematics graphs, we will develop a few of the “Big Five” kinematics
equations that use t, v1 , v2, d, and a. Finally, we will use
our Big Five to solve problems that involve Uniform motion.
Graphs of Kinematics
Ok here are
three videos that match up with my lesson that I gave on Tuesday evening. Now
the concepts are all the same but you may see a very slight terminology change
or numerical change. They are 99% the same, though. Enjoy😊
Part 3 is omitted for now – Determining instantaneous
velocity
from a curved Position-Time graph. We’ll do that on Tuesday Oct. 3.

Welcome to a new school year!
September 6, 2017
Well, about 7 or 8 years have passed since my last post
and, in the meantime, I have "retired". However, I have just come out
of retirement and have this fantastic opportunity to work again at the school
that I love. My assignment this academic year will be Basic and
Continuing Math in the afternoons (full year), Physics 30S on
Tuesday and Thursday evenings (first semester), and Pre-Calculus 40S on
Monday and Wednesdays in second semester.
Now that I know my assignment and have been
thinking of the content of my lessons, it's important to see exactly who it is
I'm planning the lessons for! Teaching is not a thing where you just rattle off
a bunch of facts and formulas to people who are sitting at desks. Each person
has their own story to tell, and I want to hear each one. We teach people,
not things. When we get to know each other - our likes, dislikes,
challenges, accomplishments, dreams, families, values, etc., it makes the
experience much more positive. Not to brag too loudly about myself, but if
I know you, and some of things you like to do, I will almost
certainly be able to create examples just for you. So, lets
get to know each other and quickly.
What exactly is the purpose of this blog?
That is a great question. Its purpose is to keep you 'in the loop' about what
we've done in class. It may contain a very brief review, a link to one of my
videos or videos that I have found valuable, scheduling information (tests,
activities, class trips, holiday and year-end parties) and so on. It is not to
take the place of being in the classroom but it will supplement (add to) what
has been done in class.
So here is what you
can do. Log onto the blog and look at the most recent post. Scroll down to the
heading that applies to you – Basic Math, Continuing Math, Physics 30S or
Pre-Calculus 40S. The content of the blog will tell you what to do next.
I will try my best to
post something each Friday after our school week is through. I’m looking
forward to chatting again. In the meantime, have a great week.
Joe
